Too Hot To...?

Have fun with these prompts about heat!

We’re having a bit of a heatwave in London at the moment, which is why this month’s prompts are all about heat.
Too hot to sleep. Write a paragraph about a character who can’t sleep. She’s lying in bed, fan on, windows open, sweaty and grumpy, whilst her partner snores next to her. Think about what people do when they are overheating but trying to sleep: is she turning over a pillow, undressing, changing position in bed, having an ice-cold shower? Close 3rd person.
Too hot to focus. Write a paragraph about a character who has a deadline she’s in danger of missing because of the unbearable heat. What is she doing/thinking about instead of finishing her report/article/novel. Close 3rd person.
Too hot to join in. Write a paragraph about a character who’s on holiday but on this particularly sweltering day needs to stay indoors, out of the sun, whilst her friends head off for a game of volleyball/netball/frisbee golf. How does she feel being left behind? Does she resent that not one of them has stayed with her? What does she do instead? 1st person.
Too hot to get close. Write a scene of dialogue for a couple where one of the characters is feeling amorous and the other is too hot to even contemplate someone holding their hand, let alone embracing them. How might this play out? This is all about tone so consider whether you are writing something that would fit in a rom-com, a psychological thriller or a literary romance.
Too hot to keep one’s cool. Write a paragraph set in a fraught office environment, where the A/C has broken, the water cooler is empty and everyone is tiptoeing around a temperamental boss who keeps hinting at cutting staff numbers. Whilst everyone tries to keep their head down and look busy, one person explodes with rage in the middle of the office. Write from the perspective of one of the other employees who witnesses this outburst. 1st person.
